Worship Overview

Worship is the defining characteristic of First Presbyterian Church and the wellspring from which all other ministries are nourished. Our tradition of strong and vital preaching, our rich sacramental life, and our renowned music program lead us in offering glory, praise and thanksgiving to God.

 

Holy Communion, which is open to everyone, is celebrated the first Sunday of every month. Baptisms are celebrated during Sunday worship.  Interested individuals or families should contact Rev. Mark Bedford at the church.

 

Children are always welcome in worship at First Presbyterian.  They are invited to participate each Sunday in a “Time for Young Disciples” at the front of the sanctuary.

The Service for the Lord’s Day includes scripture readings from the Old and New Testaments, as outlined in the Revised Common Lectionary, a sermon based upon one or several of those lessons, prayers, announcements, an offering, and the celebration of the Eucharist–also known as The Lord’s Supper. Our services occasionally include baptisms, the welcome of new members, and special “Moments for Mission” offered by members of the Guests, congregational members and pastoral staff.

 

Our Sunday services also include a Lesson for Young Christians, a conversation between the children and the pastor, specifically designed to introduce biblical themes.

 

Music is an important part of worship at First Presbyterian. Hymns and songs from the church’s long traditions are sung with the support of the church’s excellent pipe organ. The 10:30 am service includes anthems and other selections sung by the Church Choir during the Offering and Interlude. Our Hand-Bell Choir participates monthly in worship with a full complement of hand bells and chimes. Our Children’s Choir sings each month and during May and December offer a full service of worship highlighted by their singing songs and hymns as the Gospel story unfolds.

 

Prior to worship, worshippers are invited to gather in the Church Fellowship Hall for a time of refreshment and fellowship, coffee, tea, juice, and cookies!
